Zurück in den Alltag – So gelingt deinem Hund die Umstellung nach Urlaub & Ferien

Back to everyday life - This is how your dog can make the transition after vacation & Holiday

For many of us, vacation means sleeping in, long walks, spontaneous trips, and above all, more time together. And right in the middle of it all? Our dog, of course.

But at some point, it will be said: Back to everyday life. The alarm clock rings earlier again, work and school begin, and shared vacation days become the usual daily routine again.

While we humans understand why everything suddenly changes, the transition can be more difficult for our dogs. With consistent routines, a little patience, and the right activities, you can make the change easier for your four-legged friend.

Why the transition can be difficult for dogs

Dogs are strongly oriented towards recurring routines: When do we get up? When do we get fed? When do we go for a walk? And when are my humans home?

This rhythm often looks very different on vacation. Your dog might be with you all day, receive more attention, and experience more shared activities.

When normal working life resumes from one day to the next, some dogs need time to get used to it.

1. Slowly reintroduce routines

If possible, start getting back into a routine a few days before the end of your vacation.

Gradually adjust the usual settings. Feeding, walking and rest times Even short periods where your dog isn't constantly with you can be beneficial.

Established routines provide many dogs with orientation and make changes more predictable.

2. Practice being alone again

After two or three weeks of vacation time together, even a dog that normally stays alone well may initially react somewhat unusually.

Therefore, start again with short periods of separation and gradually increase them.

Elaborate farewell rituals are not necessary. Leaving and returning should remain as natural as possible.

However, if your dog shows clear signs of stress such as persistent barking, heavy panting, restlessness or destroying objects, you should make the training more gradual and seek professional help for more serious problems.

3. Peace and quiet are part of everyday life

After a holiday full of experiences, we don't need to keep our dog constantly occupied.

Quite the opposite: Rest is just as important as exercise and activity.

A designated resting place and recurring rest periods help your dog to calm down and understand that something exciting doesn't always have to be happening.

Especially after returning from vacation, everyday life can be a little boring for a while.

4. Use employment consciously

Of course, your dog still needs physical and mental stimulation after your vacation. The key is finding the right balance.

Sniffing games, short training sessions, varied walks or food search games can be easily integrated into everyday life.

Also Chew This can be a great way to offer your dog an independent and quiet activity.

Our tip: Keeping your dog occupied doesn't always have to mean action. A varied walk, a little sniffing game, and then something to chew on can be just the right mix of exercise and relaxation.

5. Create small rituals

Dogs love predictable routines. Small rituals can therefore help them get back into their usual rhythm.

For example:

Morning: Walk → Food → Rest

Afternoon: Walk → time together

At evening: small activity → chew toy → relaxation

Of course, the day doesn't need to be planned down to the minute. A rough routine is enough for many dogs to orient themselves.

Our little back-to-everyday checklist

  • Adjust feeding and walking times again
  • Practice short periods of being alone
  • offer a fixed resting place
  • Balancing movement and rest
  • Integrate small sniffing or thinking games
  • Have suitable chew toys available for quiet activity.
  • Consciously enjoy time together

And especially: Give your dog some time. Not every four-legged friend immediately returns to their usual rhythm on the first day.

And what if the dog simply comes to the office with you?

Of course, there is another option: The dog simply comes along to work. 😉

Returning from vacation is also a bit of an adjustment for our dog.

Established routines, sufficient rest, walks together and consciously chosen activities help to return to a relaxed everyday life.

Because a happy everyday life for a dog doesn't need a big adventure every day.

Sometimes all it takes is a long walk, a comfortable spot, something to chew on, and the certainty that the next time together will surely come.
